Fancy a soak in the wilderness? Tucked into the beech forest along State Highway 7, Lewis Pass Hot Springs offers a truly back-to-nature thermal experience. Unlike commercial pools, these natural hot springs are free, undeveloped pools beside the Maruia River, where you can soak under the forest canopy while listening to the river flow. It's a classic Kiwi roadside stop that rewards those who don't mind a bit of roughing it.
Highlights & What to See
- Natural hot pools: Two main pools – a warmer upper pool and a cooler lower one – both set right beside the river. The water is clear and perfectly warm (around 40°C).
- Short bush walk: A 10-minute stroll from the car park through mossy beech forest leads to the pools. The track is easy but can be muddy.
- Maruia River views: Sit in the pool and watch the river rush by – it's incredibly peaceful, especially on a cool day.
- Picnic by the river: There are basic picnic tables near the car park – perfect for a lunch stop before or after your soak.
- Stargazing: With zero light pollution, the night sky here is phenomenal. Bring a torch and stay after dark for a celestial soak.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 1–2 hours including the walk and a good soak. It's an ideal 30–60 minute stop on a road trip between Hanmer Springs and the West Coast, but you could easily linger longer if you pack a picnic. The pools are best enjoyed in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds.
