Fancy a soak in the wilderness? Tucked into the beech forest along State Highway 7, Lewis Pass Hot Springs offers a truly back-to-nature thermal experience. Unlike commercial pools, these natural hot springs are free, undeveloped pools beside the Maruia River, where you can soak under the forest canopy while listening to the river flow. It's a classic Kiwi roadside stop that rewards those who don't mind a bit of roughing it.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for 1–2 hours including the walk and a good soak. It's an ideal 30–60 minute stop on a road trip between Hanmer Springs and the West Coast, but you could easily linger longer if you pack a picnic. The pools are best enjoyed in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds.
