Winding along the ridgelines and coves of the Marlborough Sounds, the Queen Charlotte Track is a multi-day walking and mountain-biking adventure that delivers jaw-dropping coastal views, lush native bush, and a genuine sense of escape. Start or end in the historic settlement of Ship Cove (where Captain Cook once anchored) and traverse 70 km of well-maintained trail through private land, forest reserves, and bayside lodges. Whether you hike the full 3–5 days or bike a section, the track rewards with turquoise waters, birdlife, and a rhythm that feels a world away from everyday life.
Highlights & What to See
- Ship Cove – Begin (or finish) at this sheltered cove with a monument to Captain Cook, framed by pristine beach and bush.
- Resolution Bay – A perfect swim stop with crystal-clear water and a short side track to a historic whaling site.
- Furneaux Lodge – Iconic waterfront accommodation and café; treat yourself to a cold drink on the deck overlooking Endeavour Inlet.
- Mistletoe Bay – A sheltered campsite and eco-village with kayak hire and a floating platform for a refreshing dip.
- Kenepuru Saddle – The highest point on the track, offering panoramic views over both Queen Charlotte and Kenepuru Sounds.
- Anakiwa – The southern terminus, a sleepy settlement with a DOC campsite and jetty perfect for a celebratory plunge.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers allow 3–5 days to complete the full track, staying overnight at lodges, huts, or campsites. A popular pace is 4 days/3 nights, averaging 15–20 km per day. Mountain bikers can ride the entire track in 2–3 days, while day-walkers can tackle short sections (e.g., Ship Cove to Resolution Bay) in 4–5 hours. If you're short on time, the easiest access is from Anakiwa or Picton via water taxi – you can walk a half-day loop and still soak up the scenery.
