New Zealand’s smallest national park packs a mighty punch. Abel Tasman is a coastal wonderland of golden-sand beaches, turquoise coves, and lush native bush, all threaded together by the famous Abel Tasman Coast Track. This is the place to kayak, hike, or simply laze on a beach that looks like it was plucked from a South Pacific dream. The park’s easy accessibility from Nelson and Motueka makes it a must-do for any South Island itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Abel Tasman Coast Track – One of New Zealand’s Great Walks, this 60km track offers multi-day hiking or day walks between stunning beaches like Anchorage, Bark Bay, and Onetahuti.
- Kayaking the Coast – Paddle through clear waters, explore hidden coves, and spot seals and dolphins. Guided trips are available from Marahau or Kaiteriteri.
- Golden Sand Beaches – Kaiteriteri, Torrent Bay, and Marahau are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or picnicking with a view.
- Water Taxi Adventures – Use water taxis to hop between beaches, saving time for hiking or kayaking sections of the track.
- Wildlife Spotting – Keep an eye out for New Zealand fur seals, little blue penguins, and the rare weka.
- Cleopatra’s Pool – A natural rock slide and swimming hole near the Tinline campsite, fun for all ages.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2 to 4 days to fully appreciate the park. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Nelson or Motueka can still give you a taste: take a water taxi to a beach, hike a section of the Coast Track, and return by boat. For a classic experience, hike the entire Coast Track over 3–5 days, staying at huts or campsites. Kayakers often combine a multi-day paddle with overnight stays at beachside camps.
