Westport, a rugged coastal town on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, is the gateway to the wild and untamed landscapes of the region. With its dramatic river mouth, historic coal-mining heritage, and proximity to some of the country's most spectacular natural attractions, Westport offers a raw and authentic slice of New Zealand. The town itself has a laid-back, frontier vibe, with a handful of cafes and pubs where locals share tales of the sea and the bush. Whether you're here to explore the nearby pancake rocks of Punakaiki, venture into the lush forests of the Paparoa National Park, or simply soak up the stormy coastal scenery, Westport is a base for adventure and discovery.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Westport itself can be explored in a day, but to fully appreciate the surrounding attractions, plan for at least two to three days. Use Westport as a base to explore Punakaiki (30 minutes south) and the Paparoa National Park, or head north to Karamea and the Heaphy Track. If you're driving the West Coast, a stopover here breaks up the journey between Greymouth and Nelson.
