Stretching north from Wellington's outer suburbs, the Kapiti Coast is a laid-back stretch of golden beaches, protected nature reserves, and small coastal towns. The region's crowning glory is Kapiti Island, a predator-free sanctuary where native birds thrive in dense bush. With its easy access from the capital and a relaxed pace of life, this is a perfect escape for beach lovers, birdwatchers, and anyone craving fresh sea air.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a day trip from Wellington, but to truly appreciate Kapiti Island and the coastal vibe, plan for two days. Day one: explore the island (allow 4–6 hours for a guided tour and walk). Day two: relax on the beaches, visit the car museum, and walk the Ngarara Reserve. If you're self-driving, the Kapiti Coast also makes a great stop between Wellington and the central North Island.
