Milford Sound
Milford Sound, carved by glaciers and often veiled in mist, is Fiordland’s most dramatic masterpiece. Rainforest-clad cliffs plunge into dark waters, while waterfalls like Stirling and Bowen tumble hundreds of metres. The journey here – through the Homer Tunnel and along the Milford Road – is as epic as the destination itself.
Highlights & What to See
- Cruise the fiord – boat tours glide past towering peaks, seals lazing on rocks, and cascading waterfalls. Opt for an early-morning or late-afternoon sailing for softer light and fewer crowds.
- Milford Road – this scenic drive is dotted with lookouts, short walks (like The Chasm), and the Homer Tunnel. Allow plenty of stops to absorb the ever-changing landscape.
- Underwater Observatory – a unique floating centre where you can see black corals and rare deep-water species at shallow depths.
- Kayaking – paddle in the shadow of Mitre Peak for a silent, intimate encounter with the fiord’s grandeur.
- Key Summit Track – a rewarding 3-hour return walk from the Milford Road that offers alpine views over lakes and valleys.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate a full day from Te Anau or Queenstown. The drive from Te Anau takes about 2 hours each way (including stops), so a 1-hour cruise and short walks can be done in 8–10 hours. For a deeper experience, consider an overnight cruise or stay in Milford Sound Lodge to catch the dawn serenity. From Wanaka, it’s a long day (over 4 hours each way) best suited for those comfortable with early starts and long drives.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
