Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand's third-largest lake, stretches like a shimmering, s-shaped fjord through the heart of Otago. Surrounded by the rugged peaks of the Remarkables and the Crown Range, its deep, crystal-clear waters are famous for a unique natural phenomenon: a regular, tide-like rise and fall of up to 12 centimetres every few minutes, caused by a seiche. This is a place where dramatic alpine scenery meets Maori legend, with the lake's shape said to be the sleeping body of a giant, Matau. Whether you're cruising its surface, hiking its shores, or simply soaking in the views from a lakeside café, Lake Wakatipu offers a quintessentially New Zealand experience.
Highlights & What to See
- TSS Earnslaw Cruise: Board the vintage steamship for a nostalgic ride across the lake to Walter Peak High Country Farm, where you can watch sheep shearing and enjoy a gourmet barbecue.
- Glenorchy: Head to the head of the lake for jaw-dropping views of Mount Aspiring National Park – this was a key filming location for the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy.
- Queenstown Gardens: Stroll through these manicured lakeside gardens on the Queenstown Peninsula, offering panoramic views and a peaceful escape from the town buzz.
- Bungee Jumping & Adventure Sports: The lake forms a stunning backdrop for Queenstown's adrenaline activities, including the Kawarau Bridge Bungy and jet boat rides.
- Lake Wakatipu Walkway: Follow the lakeshore path from Queenstown to Kelvin Heights for gentle walking with ever-changing views across the water.
Suggested Time to Spend
To properly experience Lake Wakatipu, plan at least two to three days. This allows for a scenic cruise, a day trip to Glenorchy or the wine region of Gibbston Valley, and time to enjoy Queenstown's dining and adventure scene. If you're short on time, a half-day lake cruise combined with a walk around Queenstown Gardens still gives a taste of the lake's magic.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Wanaka: A scenic drive over the Crown Range leads to this lakeside town with the famous #ThatWanakaTree and excellent hiking.
- Cromwell: A historic gold-mining town at the junction of Lake Dunstan, known for its fruit-growing heritage and heritage precinct.
- Milford Sound: While a longer day trip (5 hours drive), combining Lake Wakatipu with a journey to Fiordland's most famous fiord is a classic South Island itinerary.
