Karori Wildlife Sanctuary
Step into a living ark at Karori Wildlife Sanctuary (also known as Zealandia), a groundbreaking eco-sanctuary just minutes from central Wellington. This lush, predator-free valley is a time capsule of New Zealand's pre-human wilderness, where ancient tuatara bask in the sun, kākā screech overhead, and the forest floor rustles with hihi and toutouwai. A 500-year restoration project, it's one of the most accessible places on the planet to see rare native wildlife thriving in their natural habitat.
Highlights & What to See
- Zealandia by Day: Walk the network of well-maintained trails through regenerating forest and along the tranquil upper reservoir. Keep an eye out for the iconic tūī, bellbird, and the elusive little spotted kiwi (best seen on a night tour).
- Night Tours: Join a guided after-dark experience to spot kiwi, glowworms, and the prehistoric-looking tuatara. The sanctuary is one of the few places where you can see kiwi in the wild.
- The Valley View Lookout: Climb to this viewpoint for panoramic vistas over the sanctuary, Wellington Harbour, and the surrounding hills — a perfect photo op.
- Te Māra a Tāne (The Garden of Tāne): A short loop showcasing the diversity of New Zealand's native plants, from towering rimu to delicate ferns.
- Interactive Exhibits: The visitor centre offers engaging displays on conservation, the sanctuary's history, and the species being reintroduced.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day (3–4 hours) exploring the sanctuary's main trails and visitor centre. If you're keen on a night tour, plan for a full evening (allow 2–3 hours for the guided walk). For serious birdwatchers or hikers, a full day lets you cover the longer tracks to the upper dam and beyond. Combine with a morning at Wellington's Te Papa museum or a stroll through the city's waterfront for a balanced day.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
